Description of business analyst roles
A business analyst is a member of the project team responsible for analyzing business and collecting requirements to improve business processes.
IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) defines business analysts as:
Liaison among stakeholders to understand the structure, policy, and operation of an organization, and to recommend a solution that allows the organization to achieve its goals.
I think this is a good description of what BA. The main thing that needs to be considered from this description is:
Liaison among stakeholders – Ba is responsible for becoming a kind of “intermediary” between business stakeholders (clients, users) and technical teams (project managers, development and testing teams).
Understanding structures, policies and operations – Business analyst must aim to understand and learn how the business operates and how it needs to be done.
Recommend solutions – The role of business analysts is to recommend a solution for business problems, or to improve business processes.
Why do we need business analysts?
A simple way to see the IT project is having two main groups of people – clients who know what they want, and developers who build IT systems to give them what they want. It’s well, the look is simple and not too possible in reality. This is for several reasons:
Developers cannot collect requirements as effectively. Yes, it’s possible for developers to determine what the business needs, but they risk having a narrow-minded design. Also, developers are usually (not always, but usually) are trained and proficient in their own roles and are not confident or convenient to communicate with business users to get requirements
Business users cannot document their own needs. Of course, business users are the best people to be able to determine what they want, because of the process or system they want to be analyzed. However, business users are generally inexperienced in this regard, and do not have technical knowledge to know what is available and what can be achieved. Business analysis is about asking questions, and there are things that analysts can ask that users don’t realize it.
For this reason, there needs to be someone who is an expert in the analysis. Someone who has technical knowledge, communication skills, and of course the ability to analyze and collect requirements. This is the role of business analysts.
The role of business analysts varies
BA can be involved more than just collecting requirements and putting it into the Word document. Many tasks and other project fields are involved:
Collect business and system requirements
Assistance with testing user acceptance or system at this project stage
Involvement with the implementation of a system
Creation or assistance with training and manual documentation
Can be involved in project management tasks of a project if needed, such as the creation of the project plan.
Business analyst steps
BA assignments in a project are:
Understand what the business or organization does, and how this operating performance.
Determine how to improve the business process or existing system
Collect requirements for system processes or improvements
Determine which steps can and must be automated or upgraded for maximum benefits
Documenting system requirements, both at a high level and more detail
Acting as a contact point, or “translation” between technical teams and business users.
Help with testing, implementation and training, as mentioned above.
